The first thing that struck me in this story is how well writer Michael Leath captures the sense of isolation and personal detachment experienced by celebrities. A unique type of loneliness. Images from the film Lost in Translation came to mind. As "A Final Gift From Uncle John" opens, Devlin Farris, a well-known Hollywood actor is in the confined surroundings of a flight... read
  • A review of The Present

I think Michael Leath is currently one of the best writers here, so I'm happy when I see one of his stories show up on my Assignments list. While the tone and genre of "The Present" was quite different from the other stories I've read by him, it did not disappoint in the least. There's a slow burn of tension while an alert mother keeps extra attention on her young son playing... read

In "Manifest Destiny", William Reid (hinge1492) succeeds in the most important thing in the science fiction genre: he created an alternate world that feels genuine and inhabited it with characters I actually cared about. The physical descriptions of the topography and atmosphere of Nirvana were richly detailed and engaging. Excellent visuals. The dialogue read well and the... read

    Hi Karlasbryant,
Thank you for your review of a letter to Michael it was a difficult one to write and I almost didnt submit it after reviewing the wealth of talent that is here on trigger street. I wanted to keep it simple yet effective. Your kind words are very inspirational to me. Thank you.
    Kind regards

    Karla -

So much of what I see you write in your comments is something I believe about writing myself. Fresh eyes is a term I use when I have put a piece aside for a period and come back and the story is fresh again. The moments when clarity is questionable are evident because I haven't just finishes reading the story or passage for the umpteenth time over several days. When you said that in your comments on my page, it hit home.

I also see you choose words in your writing for the impact. Not a cheap parlor trick, but a true writer's understanding of how the meaning and sound of the word will evoke feelings and emotions. This is the hallmark of great writing.

I stand in your shadow here at TS, but am pleased to say so. You are a powerful writer, that does so with such a gentle touch. You understand story and arcs and texture of characters, and your used of our language indicates you are a surgeon who understands her tools.

Thank you for your words about Julia. There are a few people here that truly impress me. People who I believe will one day be someone I point to and suggest I read her work before she arrived. So your thoughts on Julia are such an honor for me.

I hope you take some of your work here and market it to magazines. I googled 50 best literary magazines looking for a home for Julia and have come up with Granta and SubTropic as possibilities. They both will accept over 6000 words. I do so encourage you to think on the idea of shopping something.

Because I want to brag and name drop soon.

    Karla-

Many thanks for your review of "Cold Shoulder Mornings." You are very right... the story wasn't meant to have an elaborate story arc. Just a little window into Mary's little life.

    Aloha,
    Pili
