  Usually, it takes me a few hours to read a script. This one is only 111 pages which is right in the proper area, not too much not too little. It took me almost one week to complete. Just with the action secription and pace of this one I felt like it lasted forever. On the positive side I think that you learned a lot about Ireland and this is a good vivd explination of whatit...
  Usually, it takes me a few hours to read a script. This one is only 111 pages which is right in the proper area, not too much not too little. It took me almost one week to complete. Just with the action secription and pace of this one I felt like it lasted forever.
  On the positive side I think that you learned a lot about Ireland and this is a good vivd explination of whatit was like to go from Ireland to America in the late 1800's. Another good notw would be on page 85 when his wiffe and child die...That was dramatic and actually changed the movie and the characters. And , finally, on page 110 when we find that JOhnny has never spent a cent of the money that Sean has been sending over; Very touching.
  Now before I get into the negative part I want to say that not everyone's life belongs in the movies. People may think that their life is interesting and special but it probably isn't. I don't know if you based this character on a real person or real events but it was not exciting. I don't know where to start. The charactersare so far and few between that they are 1 dimensional. We see Colin in the begining and then not again until the last 10 pages. Same with his mother. And then same with John Callahan. The dialogue was so on the nose that I didn't even anticipate anything. The action paragraphs were...I don't know...enragingly long and detailed. But, most importantly I guess, after he has a job in America ( which takes him all of 45 minutes real-time) what does he have to overcome? He neevr has a problem.
  Honestly, I thought this was a boring script and there is nothing to be salvaged. However, writing this monster will make you ten times the writer you were before it. You need to enjoy the experience this work gave you and move on to a new piece. Good luck. read

  I like to be taken into worlds I know nothing about. Check. And the synopsis is accurate about Sean having everything some easy. Check. But reading this was the literary equivalent of watching paint dry. Way, way to much talking and description and way, way too little action and conflict. The deaths of Sean's wife and kid along with his father should probably be at about... I like to be taken into worlds I know nothing about. Check.   A whole lot of over description with not a whole lot happening. Things need to move forward. Not just physically but emotionally.A few technical things: This is classically over written in terms of description. Less is more. Don't mess around when introducing characters. This is their name and that's who they are. Capitalize the names once, and that's all. This is how the reader... A whole lot of over description with not a whole lot happening. This is how the reader knows for sure whether they are meeting the character for the first time. And the way you do transitions is bulky an unnecessary.Conversations such as the one between Sean and John on the ship is endless. Show the story. Don't tell it. This dialogue is just extremely unconvincing and repetitive. Don't direct your characters. If it already isn't clear what's happening, that's not going to help.All in all, this lingers too much on less important elements, resulting in a slow pace without a terrific payoff. You are covering the same ground over and over and over again. For example: The first eighteen pages could be squeezed to three - the rest of the entire script to under thirty.This guy's life is too easy.   There's a good story here but the script needs more conflict early on and also needs to be tightened up a bit. I think there needs to be a more definitive need for Sean to want to get to America so bad. The way it plays now he basically is doing all right in Ireland - he's got a job, great family and good friends. It's not the best existence but it's not the worst either... The way it plays now he basically is doing all right in Ireland - he's got a job, great family and good friends. It's not the best existence but it's not the worst either. There needs to be a majoor conflict that confirms for Sean that the only way out is to somehow get to America at all costs. Not to rehash what other reviews have said but it does seem to easy for Sean. He gets everything he wants with relative ease. There is no conflict until page 85 of the script. He needs to overcome more so that the emotional impact of his wife and newborns death resonates even more. The beginning needs to be tightened abit too - way too much time spent in Ireland and on the boat over to America. Descriptions go into too much detail as well. Dialogue was good in most parts i thought. read

  First, I liked Sean. To give the story conflict and Sean's loss more meaning, make his romance with Kelly difficult to achieve, more important. Cut some of the travelogue at the beginning, add to the love story instead. Give your characters names as soon as they're introduced. It's confusing if you don't. Try not to name two characters the same-John/Johnny. Don't CAP names... First, I liked Sean. You don't need all the FADE INs, FADE OUTs. You don't need to tell us which direction a character looks, and we don't need extensive scenery details. What year does this start? Tighten your scenes. For example: When Sean says he's leaving, it would be more powerful to describe Bridget's face instead of her long dialogue. End the scene with - Sean: "Before the onset of winter... within two months." You lose nothing by getting rid of everything after that. To tighten scenes, look for the core sentences that move the story forward and pare down everything that doesn't. One short, well-paced scene: The Inn Room-Morning. It's active and emotive. Use active verbs, get rid of "is", "are" as often as possible. Spot-on dialogue in parts, but it rambles too often. Decent story but it needs work. Good luck. read

  The story has a nice arc as Sean returns to where he came from. But things seem to come to easy for Sean and the set up is a little difficult to read through. There are nice details of where we are and the mood but this is not a short story, it's a screenplay and readling long paragraphs of description, that borders on prose is difficult. Sean is a fully realized character... The story has a nice arc as Sean returns to where he came from. But things seem to come to easy for Sean and the set up is a little difficult to read through. Sean is a fully realized character and with an overhaul with more tension, obstacles, and tension - this is a story with possibilities. The scenery in the film looks great, the story has to hum along faster. read

  I kept waiting for something to happen to kick off the story. Sure, a man wants to go to America to make it, but where's the underlying issues for Sean? Everything comes to easy for him. I appreciate the scenery but some of the action has too much detail. At other times, especially on the boat, Sean and John are just talking heads. Nothing happens to move the story forward... Most of all, there are no challenges for Sean early on. He needs to suffer more. Make something happen by page 25. read
