  Burlesque

  I have just watched banned in boston and although Burlesque is not really my thing, i found myself tuned in to the story from the early stages. Editing is solid and camerawork good , found myself wanting to find out more by the end. Good solid documentary, cant wait for the full length feature. paul simpson

  ‘Banned in Boston’ was an enjoyable film based on the book of the same name. The character of Lily Ann Rose tells us about the life of a burlesque dancer in the early 20s and tells us the harsh punishments that the law puts on showing what would be considered “minimal” in today’s society. The music used in this film perfectly fit the documentary-type style of the subject... ‘Banned in Boston’ was an enjoyable film based on the book of the same name. The character of Lily Ann Rose tells us about the life of a burlesque dancer in the early 20s and tells us the harsh punishments that the law puts on showing what would be considered “minimal” in today’s society.
  
  The music used in this film perfectly fit the documentary-type style of the subject. It provided an ambient melody to compliment the narrator’s desire for the stage whenever she would talk about her past. The video accented this feeling with pleasant close ups of antique photos of the business and interviewees.
  
  I don’t know whether if it was my Macbook’s incompatibility with Realplayer, but after the five-minute point, the audio started to glitch out. Often at points the audio would be silent and then start playing from it, missing a chunk of the speech. Also, the text acknowledging the interviewees’ identity was unattractive, but other than that I have no qualms with this film.
  
  This film was very informative and interesting to watch. With minor problems, I feel that this film and its filmmaker has potential to go far in the industry. I look forward to seeing more! read

  Cinematography: Good. The digitizing and expansion of the historic photos was good, along with the live images. Acting: N/A - documentary. Writing/Story: I will admit that looking at photos of some very attractive women was appealing. The story and its historical context was also interesting. There is definitely an audience for this work. However, there are those who will... Cinematography:

  I will admit that looking at photos of some very attractive women was appealing. The story and its historical context was also interesting. There is definitely an audience for this work.
  However, there are those who will not find interest as they may not have interest in historical documentaries.

  Good. The sound was crisp and audible for the most part. The musical selection(s) also added to its historic 'feel.'
  
  Overall:
  Banned in Boston was a somewhat interesting short documentary that does have an audience. It tells a story that many might be unaware of. Though there are those who might pass over this film, the author need not be concerned with that. read

  A good overall effort with nice music and a passionate story told interestingly. Where it failed for me was in the narrative. Even documentaries need to tell a story and, while you did tell the story of your mother and grandmother's foray in burlesque, I think that you could have told the story better by referring to the history of burlesque in Boston - ie present a wider... Okay, you did mention the arrest and such like but I was left wondering "well, what happened after?; when did she stop? why?". What happened to her sister? Too many questions unanswered for me to give it any more than 6 out of 10. read

  This was so well done! It was every bit as good as any biography I have ever seen on televsion. I had never heard of these people before and I was captivated by the history of it all. It was really quite sad , but she let you know she had a wonderful life and lived it as she pleased ; doing exactly what she wanted. I am sure she will be a star in heaven.

  Great job!! From the wonderful music to the fascinating interviews and your great use of classic pictures, I can't think of one thing I'd change.Your film had it all.It was so well paced I was amazed and bummed out that it was over.Your hard work payed off because it shows in the final product. Congratulations and best of luck.

  Banned in Boston, such a great tittle! It was a little bit of a let down not to get any more great stories that could have been told. This of course could be because you don't want to give much of the book away, but I found it so interesting when she talks about being arrested for showing her bum when she knew it was completely covered and I wanted to hear more of those kinds... I also thought that the restaurant guys were a bit irrelevant in the story and I'm not sure if it was done on purpose or not but it cuts of at them end with them still talking. I think that it would have been much more interesting f they would have said something of the history of the place much more than just trying to plug their restaurant.
  But over all I liked the hint of the story and it made me want to find out more about it. read

  This is an interesting story and your mom is definitely the star. I was a little confused who she was talking about some of the time I'm assuming it was her mother who died from the overdose. That point was quite important and I felt it lost a bit of it's impact by where it was placed in the structure. Introducing the other contributors a lot earlier and getting the scene setting... This is an interesting story and your mom is definitely the star. I was a little confused who she was talking about some of the time I'm assuming it was her mother who died from the overdose.   Introducing the other contributors a lot earlier and getting the scene setting out of the way before learning about the mothers death would have established her a bit more maybe and made her story feel more significant. You could also look at how the music cuts out just before we hear this too.
  This would also have allowed you to intercut between contributors a lot more and vary the pace.
  I wouldn't give the last word to the two guys though, it's your mom who's the star. read

  I liked this slice of Americana from a time that lies behind us and yet it is still somehow relevant. A good production provides us with of mixes black and white stills on contemporary video. Altogether it works as a documentary and the audio is good. Maybe some more upbeat music could be added, but an entertaining story. I liked it.
