  When I was a kid in school I started up a club called the Dum Dum Club that had no function, only rules. You had to undergo initiation that included being thrown fully clothed in the river (which in those days was unpolluted) and wear certain kinds of clothes in a certain way. Nobody ever questioned the purpose of the club (it had none), but there were plenty of people who... Nobody ever questioned the purpose of the club (it had none), but there were plenty of people who wanted to join. I was reminded of this while watching the pointless activities of the Dotsters. That is one group I would never want to join. Plastering people and objects with dots is not my idea of fun or humor. And that is one of the main flaws of this documentary. It is basically about boring people living pointless lives, and it spends too much time on them and their inane outlook on their activities. Ten minutes was far too long to spend in their dotty company. The documentary could have covered all the necessary ground in under two minutes, and been far more questioning. read

  At first, considering the subject matter, I found myself thinking "well... this is pointless." I don't know that the term "controversy" would describe what went on at the festival, but, the film certainly showed how when you get enough bored/pissed off people together, they'll complain about anything. The opening V.O. could have been better by giving more details. i.e. *where"... At first, considering the subject matter, I found myself thinking "well... this is pointless." But, yeah, I wouldn't say people complaining about round stickers is all that interesting. read

  People Are Strange

  I've always had a liking for documentaries like this. I love getting a taste of this country that I have never had the pleasure to see. Drive-By Dotters is a perfect example of how a seeming insignificant event can be so interesting. The idea of the film was great, but the execution could have used a little work. Some more character development would have been a plus.... I've always had a liking for documentaries like this. I love getting a taste of this country that I have never had the pleasure to see. Some more character development would have been a plus. I realizet that it is a short film, but it can be done. All in all, it was well put together. I hope this filmmaker keeps it up. read

  I'm not sure what to think about this whole thing. While it's somewhat amusing it runs a little long in my subjective opinion. Can the human race get anymore vain now that we're arguing about dots? I think it's amazing that their is actually a story to tell about this ridiculous concept and event. And then they got shut down? Production was decent low end docu style, a lot... I'm not sure what to think about this whole thing. While it's somewhat amusing it runs a little long in my subjective opinion. Can the human race get anymore vain now that we're arguing about dots?   THIS MOVIE CAPTURED A SUBJECT TOTALLY UNKOWN TO THIS VIEWER AND TRY AND TRY I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE WOULD CARE ABOUT DOTS. IT DID NOT CAPTURE MY IMAGINATION AND UNTIL THE END I STILL DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE WOULD CARE ABOUT DOTS. MAYBE THE GREAT CAMERA SHOTS MADE UP FOR THE LACK OF SUBJECT. THE WELL-MADE DOCUMENTARY FEATURES CARRIED THE FILM BUT STILL COULD...   This was a very compelling documentary that examines, in the microcosm of a local festival, issues that effect entire societies, if not civilization itself. The dotters seem to be doing something that most people think is pretty harmless, so long as someone else cleans it up. The clean-up crew clearly doesn't get a thrill out of being the ones stuck with the aftermath. Perhaps... This was a very compelling documentary that examines, in the microcosm of a local festival, issues that effect entire societies, if not civilization itself. The dotters seem to be doing something that most people think is pretty harmless, so long as someone else cleans it up. The clean-up crew clearly doesn't get a thrill out of being the ones stuck with the aftermath. Perhaps a volunteer dot cleanup day organized by the dotters would have been a fair compromise? The film is quite impartial. Are the cleanup crews curmdugeons? Or are the Dotters simply hedonistic free riders? I think the truth lies somewhere in between. It would have been interesting to see how the festival reached it's decision on how to deal with the issue...who are these "highest authorities" that are referred to in the production notes?
  
  As far as filmmaking goes this was an excellent piece of work. The music was well used and the editing was generally nicely paced (it did drag a bit in places though). Overall a very enjoyable, thought provoking doc.

  I really enjoyed watching this Doc, great interviews and information. I've never heard about this so it was great to hear the story. The production was very good, great sound and camera work. I am of the mind that the dots should stay and if they don't want the dots then they can lose the tourist dollars. Overall a great short.

  Suprisingly the documentary wasnt that bad. Considering it was about dots, you somehow kept it intereseting. I like the controversey behind it and I could see how dots would upset some of the people. I think if you would of done the sequal, it probably wouldnt of been the same so it's a good thing you didnt do it. Nothing really else to say about it.

  This documentary film was not bad. It tackled both sides of an issue, small as it may be, in a straightforward yet fairly interesting way. I liked the music of the two local bands and they helped lend flavor to the film. I do think that it didn't need to be as long as it was as some of the clips were redundant. Were the two dotters interviewed from the same group? What are their motivations for dotting? Too bad, also, that the confrontation of the groups was not filmed as it would have helped provide more drama and tension. As it is, the film is not bad but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was good. read

  I just watched an absurdist short ,and then accepted this assignment and my God people are really strange. Dots, people making an issue out of Dots. The piece was balanced, showing both points of views, very well. But really people, Dots, somebody needs a life. Being a Native New Yorker I was thinking to myself, as I watched this, "and America thinks New Yorkers are strange'... I just watched an absurdist short ,and then accepted this assignment and my God people are really strange. Dots, people making an issue out of Dots.   Being a Native New Yorker I was thinking to myself, as I watched this, "and America thinks New Yorkers are strange' . DOT, I couldn't believe it. Dots. Watching the piece further I said to myself, It's gotta be California. Right this whole thing is gotta be from California. No,. it turns out it's from next store in Pennsylvania.
  
  Maybe it's not New Yorkers that are wierd, but all the DOTS, from the rest of the country trying to find a home. read
