  I love eRATicate! As someone who just completed their first Super 8 film, I have a real appreciation for the work that goes into making a silent b/w film successful. The story was very clever and I found myself the entire time wondering what was going to happen next. The scene where the rats taped his mouth and the tail draped over...well, I laughed out loud! : ) I liked... I love eRATicate! The scene where the rats taped his mouth and the tail draped over...well, I laughed out loud! : ) I liked that you didn't use the title cards too much - it was just enough to make those rats endearing. The darkness that you spoke about I did notice, but for me, it did not take away at all from the film - I actually thought it added to it very nicely. I received a DVD before I started my Super 8 class this semester of what are apparently the "best" Super 8 films my school had to show me as successful examples - and to be honest, eRATicate put those films to shame! Great work! :) read

  The rats were amazing! I'm not kidding. I could've sworn they were trained movie animals. Nice work with them. The film: This film was beautifully shot. I love Super-8, and you really played its aesthetic quality for the best here. The mood of the film is haunting, and enchanting. Your shot choices were smart. Very fairy tale-esque with a jagged edge. This goes hand... The rats were amazing! I'm not kidding. I could've sworn they were trained movie animals. Nice work with them.
  
  The film: This film was beautifully shot. I love Super-8, and you really played its aesthetic quality for the best here. The mood of the film is haunting, and enchanting. Your shot choices were smart. Very fairy tale-esque with a jagged edge. This goes hand in hand with the way your film was cut -also very very smart. Great timing -especially during the rats' revenge sequence. I love the tape going over the mouth, the dragging, etc. Really sharp, gutsy sequence. You really know how to create suspense and play every one of its notes for the tone of your film.
  
  Your leading lady did a fantastic job. Great screen presence. She reminded me a little of Audrey Tatou.
  
  I wasn't a fan of your title cards. I understand why you used them, but I think the story, compositions, and editing were astute enough to convey the story.
  
  All in all, spectacular job. A very original work. Great atmosphere in this film. I certainly look forward to your next venture. read

  All the best techniques of silent film, combined with modern editing and camera work. The shot from the bedroom right into the rat cage was GREAT! The ending is also appropriately sad and strange. You're never quite sure why the rats were so upset--the fact that the girl choose the guy who was mean to them once seems to be the primary reason--but the girl is the one that evokes... You're never quite sure why the rats were so upset--the fact that the girl choose the guy who was mean to them once seems to be the primary reason--but the girl is the one that evokes the most sympathy. Her affection for the rats drives away any human companionship she might have--even the title card makes it clear that the rats the real winners--as it should be, the 'monster' always comes out on top in a horror film. Great job. read

  Dark and kind of creepy.

  I liked this film, I found it to be kind of creepy. Not because it's dark, but it reminds me of something like a Tales from the Crypt or an Outer Limits episode or something. Could it be because I don't like rats? Possibly. But I don't think so. I think it was just well done all around.

  Cool mood. Thought Mr. Williams had the Tim Burton thing going for him. The score was great. Can't believe the rats behaved as well as they did. Wasn't crazy about the husband character. Thought he might have been a little miscast. Perhaps too young.

  As your production notes state the lighting was dark most of the time. Acting was good by the girl, the boy was a little over the top though. If this had subtitles it would be a perfect film for about 80 years ago. I thought everything was going well until the foul language at the end. I think you could use some other term to say goodbye and still make a valid point. I... As your production notes state the lighting was dark most of the time. I don't think the rats would have heard that kind of language being raised by the girl who seemed just sweet as sugar. You did everything without dialouge, except when they mouthed I love you and that should have been said with facial expressions in keeping with the context and structure of the film. Overall, I would recommend this to move on in further competitions. Nice job. read

  The classic silent picture style definitely worked for this piece, down to the dramatic facial expression acting and the player piano-style soundtrack. I didn't think of it as a horror film and not quite a comedy; it seems that the story could be pushed a bit more in one direction or the other. Good camera work and editing; super 8 can be a pain, so I can appreciate the work...   This is a fantastic film. I adore the way it has been filmed in the style of a classic silent movie. Brilliant. It is so refreshing to see a film that is both funny and quite scary at the same time. I love how the rats play such a huge part in the film. To start you feel sorry for the rats and then when they get their revenge you are willing them on. The acting was fantastic... This is a fantastic film.   I love how the rats play such a huge part in the film. To start you feel sorry for the rats and then when they get their revenge you are willing them on.
  
  The acting was fantastic from both human and animal actors. The story line was perfectly clear and easy to follow. Definately one of the most original and best short films i have ever seen.

  Very nicely done. This was a story with a beginning, middle, and ending and all well done, with perfect pacing. Without getting too analytical let me just state some of the things I liked best. The boy and the girl were very attractive people. What a pretty face your actress has. The music was fitting and pleasing to the ear. Good piano playing. I liked the camera work,... Very nicely done. I liked the camera work, various points of view kept it stimulating. The only complaint I have is that at times it was too dark. That may be something I can adjust on my monitor. Not sure. The rats played excellent "straight men" in the comedy. There were a lot of nice beats in the film. Here are some specific shots that stood out. They may be simple but. . .the look of fear on the actor's face in the murder scene; the upside down moon/f-you good bye note, and my #1 favorite, the dude taunting the rat, poking him in the head. I'm sure the poke was either very soft and the rat was unhurt, probably even liked it. This was edited the old fashioned way in super 8? I'll have to read your production notes. Anyway, great job. Good luck in the festival. I bet you do well. read

  I'm always a sucker for films that go for a silent movie look - if it's done right. And eraticate, in my (next to worthless) opinion, nailed it right on the head. This short just oozes style from start to finish. The super 8 is perfect for the B&W scratched print look that no doubt was enhanced with what must have been a very lengthy editing process. This short just oozes style from start to finish. The super 8 is perfect for the B&W scratched print look that no doubt was enhanced with what must have been a very lengthy editing process. The actors were great, Emma Jones' make-up was spot on for a flapper and Aaron hammed up the villain role nicely - at one stage I felt sure he was going to twiddle his moustache before yanking the little blighters out of their cage and lashing 'em to a train track! Which brings me to the film's stars - the rats themselves. The viewing experience of this short will very much depend on how the viewer feels about rats in the first place - cute little fellas or flea-ridden vermin? Well I like 'em and after watching this short I like 'em even more. It must have taken loads of patience during the shoot but the result was some great shots, nicely framed and then cut together with some expertise. Yeah, it was a bit dark and confusing at times but I hate it when people gripe about compression issues - I bet the whole thing looks fine on the big screen. Oh - and the score was superb and made the film.
  Well done Mr Williams, I think Eraticate is a great short film. read
