  This one feels like an actual documentary. If all your stuff was like this I wouldn't be so angry every time I see your name pop up. Notice, two back to back reviews for you. I'm watching them and am honest when you do have a descent one, but I am still not a fan. Also in all honesty this is the best of the ones that I've seen.   Elmer, Again, a different avenue from you which I'm not used to seeing. Not a bad documentary, man. I've never even heard of Catlin or Ha-won-je-tah before, so kudos for that as I enjoy learning new things. I'm curious, what made you want to do a documentary about these particular people? -Jordan

  I like this submission very much as it creatively warmed me into understanding the smooth administration and ultimate demise of the main character. The careful use of tribal music, blending the numerous slides of portraits of artist George Catlin, vividly displayed an active tribal lifestyle of the Sioux Indians, while adding depth to their ritual/spiritual beliefs. The celebratory... I like this submission very much as it creatively warmed me into understanding the smooth administration and ultimate demise of the main character.
  The careful use of tribal music, blending the numerous slides of portraits of artist George Catlin, vividly displayed an active tribal lifestyle of the Sioux Indians, while adding depth to their ritual/spiritual beliefs. The celebratory introduction and favorable interaction of the artist Catlin with the greatly respected Sioux Chief Ha-won-je-tah, facilited the chief's later concent.
  While events left the one thing to ponder, 'the original idea the Sioux People feared most about portraits and their soul', the ironic and climatic ending of Chief Ha-won-je-tah provides reality for finding the one living thing great as himself to battle. Great job. Full circle, and well done. read

  This story of Ha-won-je-tah is one of many in the history of American Indian's, brave or otherwise, that were strong and stood up and fought for themselves, to no avail, as their race of people were continuously wronged in the worst possible ways. This history will forever be a stain in the annuls of American history, a stain created by those disgusting and prejudice people... This story of Ha-won-je-tah is one of many in the history of American Indian's, brave or otherwise, that were strong and stood up and fought for themselves, to no avail, as their race of people were continuously wronged in the worst possible ways. This history will forever be a stain in the annuls of American history, a stain created by those disgusting and prejudice people of a different time that wouldn't allow a strong race of individuals to live in freedom and prosper like so many races have in this country today.
  
  Awesomely creative images are shown throughout this work, with wonderful and appropriate music over them. Again, a solid piece of short film cinema from E. Lang. read

  I thought this was a documentary. What's with giving opinions? The music, editing, and voice over were all good. I just felt like I was in 7th grade again. I was in the mood for some fiction, so the nostaglia was a little lost on me. Mostly a job well done all things considered.

  A very interesting documentary short. I didn't know about Ha-won-je-tah or George Catlin. The visuals and the music brought added dimensions to the flick. The narrator sounded a little generic but did the job. Since the title was ha-won-je-tah, maybe you should have gone a little more in depth in the Chief's history. Would have more for a more complete film. The character... A very interesting documentary short.

  The character seems to be interesting enough and I don't think the viewers would have minded spending more time with him. You could have shown us made made him such an powerful chief. Gone a little more in depth with his feats and victories. If you wanted to keep the film at the same length then maybe you would have had to decide taking time away from Catlin.

  This short film is based on great art told by George Catlin through his paintings. The paintings describe the landscape and the setting of the story of a brave West American, Ha-won-je-tah. The editing of the film is perfect and the story sails smoothly from one painting to another. The background score adds the scintillating mood to the short film and gives a unique strength...   Beautiful paintings, thank you for showing them! Catlin's story is absolutely lovely. I found you picked good music and appropriate images to tell it. The landscapes give a feeling of how Catlin must have viewed the land while travelling through it, but I particularly liked the portraits. As you say, they convey something about the people he was painting. However, there are... Beautiful paintings, thank you for showing them!

  However, there are two things I would have done different.
  
  I wouldn't have added the few sound and visual effects, for example digitally 'maiming' Ha-won-je-tah's portrait. On the other hand, I would have added some current photographs of those lands. Never having travelled where Catlin went, I'm curious about the natural colors and the lay of the land.
  
  The narration was fine. I like how you didn't go for the usual documentary style voice.

  It's hard to review a short film that's, well, as different and as interesting as this one. While I appreciate what the director -- and especially the editor -- were trying to say, the film itself fails for one single reason: it isn't clear enough. There is certainly a story to be told here, but the narration became a hindrance whereas the beauty of the images was enough for...   Ha-won-je-tah (Final) worked very well in telling a story through paintings, about the life of George Catlin and Ha-won-je-tah himself. As well offering a glimpse, which is the true beauty of Catlin's work, of the last days of the American West, when the native peoples that had lived there were still free from the oppression and strife that they would soon become embroiled...
