  I do love me some golf. So when I saw the subject of this I was immediately intrigued. Well crafted story. The suspense built as the story progressed. Characters were believable. Dialog was crisp and sounded like two people speaking to each other. This is a personal opinion and I wouldn't put much stock into it. I thought the alligators were a little bit of a let down...   This is a personal opinion and I wouldn't put much stock into it. I thought the alligators were a little bit of a let down. I expected something much more alarming.
  
  But like I say, that is just me. I still enjoyed the astory.

  Aside from the title, "Play It Where It Lays" is a terrific start to what should be a longer piece. The prose is tight and descriptive without being cloying, which means it's still loose enough to breathe in. (A few cliches, such as "careening wildly," could be omitted to improve on the already terrific flow of words.) Yet the ending stops so abruptly that the reader feels... Aside from the title, "Play It Where It Lays" is a terrific start to what should be a longer piece. The prose is tight and descriptive without being cloying, which means it's still loose enough to breathe in. (A few cliches, such as "careening wildly," could be omitted to improve on the already terrific flow of words.) Yet the ending stops so abruptly that the reader feels a physical lurching rather than an emotional pay-off at the conclusion; the story's end seems as though it's been ripped from the hands of the reader. It's imperative that the cheating liar Hendrick attempts to retrieve the golf ball from within the group of alligators, or else try to defend himself and wrestle the gun from Jameson. By leaving the ending open the reader is left with only a cheap trick. read

  I enjoyed reading a sports story (all mine are sports stories, and I thought I was the only one doing it!). At the beginning there, I thought you weren't going to explain what "improving his lie" meant, but then you made it clear almost straightaway - good. A non-golf fan can easy follow this story. Here in the UK, we have people changing their middle names to Portsmouth Football... I enjoyed reading a sports story (all mine are sports stories, and I thought I was the only one doing it!). At the beginning there, I thought you weren't going to explain what "improving his lie" meant, but then you made it clear almost straightaway - good. A non-golf fan can easy follow this story. Here in the UK, we have people changing their middle names to Portsmouth Football Club and stuff, so I totally got the fact that Jameson got ridiculously worked up about golf.
  
  Two small nitpicks. It took me a long time to work out what a "Blazer" was. In the end, I got that it was a car. Having googled it, I reckon that if you had initially written, "Chevrolet Blazer" before switching to shorthand, everyone would have known what it was, right from the beginning.
  
  Finally, on page 5, you have written "its'". When you use "its" to mean belonging to it, you just write it straight - no apostrophe. It's an annoying exception to the rules of grammar that catches a lot of people off guard. This was the only mechanical error that I could see, so well done for writing a great story with a high level of accuracy. read

  You accomplished what you intended. I finished this story with a chuckle and a smile. It's definitely well written and an entertaining piece. The concept works well in this format, but I can also picture it as a screenplay. It seems a perfect beginning to a twisted comedy. There's not much description of the two characters.   There's not much description of the two characters. I thought adding some physical description would be helpful. I chose to see them in their best golf attire which added to the humor of the moment.
  
  The structure is good, but giving a little more background will build attachment to the characters and get the reader more engaged. That way we care more about what happens.
  
  All in all, I liked this. I think you have a talent for building suspense. Good job.

  I find golf to be one of the most boring subjects to read about. It is one of the last thing that I could imagine enjoying but you have certainly made this enjoyable. From the beginning your story I was interested in reading on. You started in the middle of the action that so many writers seem to forget to do. But immediately I wanted to find out why the character was blind... I find golf to be one of the most boring subjects to read about. It is one of the last thing that I could imagine enjoying but you have certainly made this enjoyable. From the beginning your story I was interested in reading on. You started in the middle of the action that so many writers seem to forget to do. But immediately I wanted to find out why the character was blind folded and what was in store for him. I found your style enjoyable with a good amount of humor even when the characters were arguing. It went quickly and was definitely worth a couple of minutes of my life. I would love to read more of your stories and write reviews as long as they have the same personality this one had. Your story structure is very well done and it's not often you read a story that is wrapped up so nicely. I could certainly see this as a well done Tales From The Crypt Episode. What else can I say? It was great, golf topic and all. The only thing that was a minus was simply a typo where he says, "What do you mean I have to prove it to you?..". I think there is a piece of dialogue missing because the other guy didn't mention proving it as far as I read. Here is the section of writing.

  DON'T LIE ABOUT YOUR LIE

  Pretty original concept, except most golfers have had the idea in some form or another, they just never thought to write it down. Writing is crisp and concise with a theme, which although impossible, is a good read. To toss old Hendricks in the alligator pit for cheating is not a bad idea at all, particularly when the golf game involves $$$$. a tour card, etal. Don't forget,... Pretty original concept, except most golfers have had the idea in some form or another, they just never thought to write it down.

  Short,simple, and sweet, Play It Where It Lays is, as the author promised, a quick read. It's a sudden death playoff round with a surprise at the end that will keep me thinking the next time I hit the greens. The ending confused me a bit, because I thought all the guy had to do was hit the ball 310 yards and that was it. But at the end it sounds like the whole purpose was... But at the end it sounds like the whole purpose was the make him play through the alligator hole. So I guess he dies by crock, not by gun. Well, he shouldn't have cheated. Well written, fun read, and I thank you for posting. I seriously wish I could write something nit picky about it, but I couldn't find anything really wrong with it. Good job. read

  It is inconceivable to me that a professional golfer during a tournament could improve his lie by moving his ball a "considerable distance" without being detected. There are caddies, spectators, and officials at every hole, around every fairway. And what about TV cameras? I know of at least one instance where a golfer made some mistake, undetcted, and TV spectators called... I know of at least one instance where a golfer made some mistake, undetcted, and TV spectators called in to complain. But, okay. The writing's not bad. Punctuation needs attention. Nothing big. Easy to read. However, I'm not sure what happened after Hendricks hit that drive. The ball seemed to stay in the air a long time, long enough that he thought he'd driven it over 300 hundred yards. Not likely that he'd hear it splash into the water. But then the water is "behind a low fence in front of him." Did he actually drive the teed ball 300 yards and Jameson dropped another ball into the water? A cheater cheating a cheater? Nice try. Good luck. read

  I couldn't resist! haha Great job maintaining suspense and interest throughout this story. I also liked these characters' names as well. You must be a drinking man Jameson Whiskey and Hendricks Gin, which of course made me want a drink pretty darn badly. Any-hoo, this story was cleanly written without very many grammatical, punctuation or spelling errors, which is surprisingly... I couldn't resist! haha
  
  Great job maintaining suspense and interest throughout this story. I also liked these characters' names as well. You must be a drinking man Jameson Whiskey and Hendricks Gin, which of course made me want a drink pretty darn badly.
  
  Any-hoo, this story was cleanly written without very many grammatical, punctuation or spelling errors, which is surprisingly refreshing.
  
  With respect to characters, I struggled with finding parity between Jameson's declaration that he is now broke and lost his tour card with wanting to exact vengeance by kidnapping Hendricks and then having him play it where it lays from an alligator swamp. He's probably a lot more screwed up, than even you had articulated.
  
  The dialog was a little expository and too on the nose, especially the top of page 3.

  Remind Me Never to Learn Golf!

  I'm not at all familiar with the game of golf, but the tension and sense of drama as Hendrick's tried to hit the ball was incredibly done. The story was nicely editied (thank you!), and formatted. It had a clear beginning, middle and end. The characters were well fleshed out. The only thing I didn't understand, and thats only because I'm not familiar with the game, is the ball... I'm not at all familiar with the game of golf, but the tension and sense of drama as Hendrick's tried to hit the ball was incredibly done. The story was nicely editied (thank you!), and formatted. It had a clear beginning, middle and end. The characters were well fleshed out. The only thing I didn't understand, and thats only because I'm not familiar with the game, is the ball being in the alligator pit. Was he supposed to go in and attempt to hit it? If so, I guess it was either that choice, or get shot? But anyway, I won't let my lack of knowledge about the game affect your rankings. I thought it was a very well written story! read
