As long as I stick to the core of the story that makes me happy, I can compromise if it means more people will get something from the story.
If they don't, ... and here's what my original bitch was to you - there's gotta be a better way that a generic post about your frustrations. Why not ask them up front, through email.. A polite email through TS almost always gets a polite response. "Could you tell me why you thought Tucker killed the dog for money? If you thought he killed the dog for another reason, what was it?"
SImple, polite, no judgement call that they "didn't get it", which'll turn people off. And you get valuable feedback for your next draft.
Cheers, dude.
I'm at beer-hoisting time - You're invited. We sit around a talk shop, get drunk and have a laugh at the stress of it all.
Good luck

Paul, you have to be a young'un, because you are way to easy to have fun with. I haven't seen this many name drops in a spirited defense since .... ever, really. Or so many CAPITALIZATIONS because I won't get where the emphasis should be if they are small case.
I trust you remember you read one of my stories, and said to change a few things and ship it out for publishing? I don't suppose I qualify as elite enough to review your stuff, eh? That is a bigger laugh that you liking emo, because you do seem so emo. Emo music sucks, because it's all about "people don't understand me". So, there ya go.
Dude, I'm fucking with you, okay, and having a laugh. I read your stories, both of them. You write at an above average level. Your posts are sometimes a riot though. If you want to keep arguing, great, but imagine were havin' a pint at a pub chattin' back and forth about our stories, having some laughs and some goods debates. Grab a sense of humour and come join. :)
Oh GOD! "A young'un"! You flatter me! I WISH!
No, no.. look at my picture. Ok, it's probably too small to see, but trust me, I don't dye my sideburns gray for increased gravitas.
And don't make fun of my USING CAPITAL LETTERS!!@!@# If I could use ITALICS instead you never would have noticed!!!
Look... If you think I'm taking this too seriously then we come back to what started this discussion in the first place, i.e. my failure to write in a way that others will understand just precisely what I mean.
I've conceded that. So we don't really have any argument there, eh?
And while I'm old, I do not -- yet -- have alzheimers. Yes, I remember reading your story, and you're good. Not great, but you could certainly earn a living.
But what bugs me about Triggerstreet -- at least the short story side, haven't found this to be as true on the screenplay side -- is that so many have such a limited experience with the medium. (Hell, some have limited experience with the English language!)
You I don't count among them. (So I wonder why you even jumped in on this discussion I was having with, ummm... myself.) You wrote:
"Is Tucker's act of killing the dog a metaphor for the death of the marriage?
"So, I get the sense something is going on underneath the surface of the story, but I'm not clear on what. Whether than means it's too abstract, or I'm just not getting it, I don't know. That's the beauty of stories sometimes, the debate that happens after."
YES! Yes, it IS a metaphor for the death of the marriage. So you don't fully get it -- OK! That's MY fault. But at least you didn't think that the only reason he killed the dog was because he's cheap. At least you saw that there was more to the action than the simple surface impression that would come from a quick read.
THAT's what's frustrating to me. Does that make sense?

It's always the author's responsibility when a significant number of his readers don't get something he wants them to get. Always, always, always.
Yeah, I get that. Which -- again -- is why I wrote:
"I know that, if so many people misunderstand it, then odds are I simply haven't made it clear enough."
And it's not that "no one gets me".
Apparently ChaseNight gets me. Apparently LBarbarell gets me -- he doesn't like the story, but apparently he seems to understand it. Susan P gets me. She didn't review the story, but she read it and commented on it on the message boards --
http://bulletin.triggerstreet.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=50735
So it's not like I've written a story and it's been universally dissed.
(And BTW, I happen to LIKE Dashboard Confessional, AND emo music... but that's beside the point...)
I have to admit -- cocky asshole that I am -- I tend to study those who review my work to determine the quality of THEIR work, and the quality of the work to which they've given either good or bad reviews.
Call me petty, but it makes me feel better to be able to say "Well, no WONDER they didn't get it."
Some get it, some don't. It's a natural inclination -- and it makes me feel MUCH better -- to assume that the ones who get it are the smart ones.
I don't apologize for that. I'm a writer fer chrissakes.

...Yes, that's why I said,
"I know that, if so many people misunderstand it, then odds are I simply haven't made it clear enough."
So I'm not sure why you seem so angry. I don't expect anyone to "read my mind".
But I've always found that the great thing about good writing is that it DEMANDS interpretation. Everything is not spelled out for the lowest level reader. You have to pay attention. Stories that spell everything out tend to be didactic and obvious... and boring.
My assumption was that anyone reading this story would see that the protagonist is an asshole and a control freak. Clearly I was wrong.
(see above re: "I know that"... etc.)
All the same, I would suggest that anyone wanting stories that spell everything out "clearly, so there's no guessing needed"... stick to Stephen King, James Patterson, or your average high school writer. It's a well-respected style that commands a high readership... But few writers consider it anything resembling "art".

I know that, if so many people misunderstand it, then odds are I simply haven't made it clear enough. But on the other hand... maybe you guys just haven't met many asshole control freaks! lol
